Amazon.com Product Review
Designed for residential use, the Nighthawk Carbon Monoxide detector keeps everyone in the house safe from poisonous, odorless CO fumes. The unit detects carbon monoxide levels from 30 to 999 parts per million. Its low-profile design doesn't stand out when connect to any wall outlet. The unit plugs directly into AC outlets for easy setup, and comes equipped with a 9-volt battery for backup during power outages. Its loud, 85-decibel alarm is sure to alert the whole house when safe carbon monoxide levels are breached. The Nighthawk is UL listed, and features a continuous digital readout of carbon monoxide levels, as well as peak-level memory display, and a test/reset button. It also can be stationed on a tabletop with the included 8-foot AC cord. The Nighthawk comes with a 5-year manufacturer warranty. --Brian D. Olson

5 out of 5 stars A Life Saver   November 20, 2008

Whether one cooks or heats with a fuel source, and that includes outdoor grilling (For those that prefer to leave their windows/sliding glass doors open while grilling) the Kidde NightHawk Carbon Monoxide Monitor is a must have.

This particular system has all the bells and whistles. It provides 9 volt battery backup and plugs directly into AC outlets for easy setup. The loud 85 decibel alarm will definitely awaken even the deepest sleeper. This unit features a continuous digital readout of carbon monoxide levels, as well as peak-level memory display. It also has an attached 8 foot cord for mobile use.

As a former firefighter I can attest that way too many lives have been lost due to carbon monoxide poisoning. Make no bones about it, it will kill you. If one owns a two story home, buy two monitors. If one owns a single story large home still purchase at least two monitors. There is no such thing as too much safety. Irregardless of the instructions, inspect and change the backup battery every 6 months. DO not let dust build up on the monitor. For safety sake TEST THE SYSTEM MONTHLY.

5 out of 5 stars Great device!   November 14, 2008
We just bought a new house and this product makes us feel a lot safer. It's low maintenance, you can just plug it in. So far, it works great. A great investment!

4 out of 5 stars Works - but false alarms possible   November 11, 2008
Although the product works as advertised we found that many external sources can make it go off, such as cell phones nearby, RF interference etc. If you find yours going off and your sure its a false reading check for interference from things in the house nearby that transmit RF waves.

5 out of 5 stars Works in Practice   October 16, 2008
Our Viking convection oven didn't light immediately and neither my wife nor I noticed it until I went upstairs from the kitchen and saw the Kidde Nighthawk LED display rising from "0"ppm to "40", "50", "57", at which point we opened the windows, turned on the fans etc (50ppm is still considered safe by OSHA but anything over 0ppm isn't alright by me). In any case this detector was one floor up from our kitchen and still caught what was certainly a hazard. I highly recommend getting this unit, because of its LED readout. It's very useful to know what the PPM of CO detected is and you can do that with this unit. With most alarms, w/out LED readouts you have no idea if it's 50ppm or 10,000ppm (huge leak). The difference between the two readings being that you can open the windows and look for the problem in the first case where in the latter, you should head for fresh air immediately. The product works - LED readout is absolutely key.

1 out of 5 stars very short life   September 24, 2008
"This is the third Kidde Nighthawk that we've owned and all have exhibited the same behavior - after a little more than a year they produce a false alarm in the dead of night."

I completely agree with the above reviewer. It works fine initially. But it only lasts about a year. After that, it starts to produce a false alarm. I have purchased two of them back-to-back, thinking that the first one was a fluke, but the second one also only worked for a year.
