Cool Light, Poor Performance January 2, 2009 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The Maglite Solitaire is a pretty cool looking tool, but its performance leaves a lot to wish for. For the most part it is outdated by the new microlights on the market. Lets take a look at the pros and cons.
Pros:
Small, and lightweight, but not as small and light as the new microlights.
Adjustable beam, changes from flood to spotlight (though you might not get a lot of usable light due to the "dark rings."
Comes with battery and keychain lanyard
Has a spare bulb (which is tiny, so be careful you do not lose it)
Useful only for a bit of light while traveling through you dark home at night, or for finding a key hole, or for nurses/docs assessing corneal light reflexes. Other than that, not much use.
Cons: Very dim, poor light. In spotlight mode it does travel far, but the amount of light is very small and dim. In flood mode, the light is dimmer and the dark rings caused by poor reflector keep it from providing any good light.
EXPENSIVE ONLINE!! Look at the shipping costs. The shipping charge pretty much cover the price of the Solitaire at Wal Mart. Its definitely not worth buying it online, besides the fact that you'll be sorry you spent even 5 dollars on this light.
If you attach it to your keys, it will get scratched, and the paint will begin to fall off, thus it will lose its "cool" look.
There IS a LED upgrade bulb for the Solitaire, which costs around $20. This can buy you 4 more Solitaires, or you can invest this money in a microlight such as a Photon. Try the Photon Rex, which is a rechargeable microlight, all you do is hook it up to almost ANY battery, and it'll recharge.
For a very similar light to the Solitaire, consider the Streamlight Microstream (.5 watts, 20 lumens). This little light will even blow the AA Mini Maglite away.
Not great, but okay light December 19, 2008 This light is okay.
Cons: It's not a bright light. It's not a LED. You have to twist it to create the desired focus (a plus if you actually want a wide scatter beam, a minus if you want a quick focused beam)
Pros: It's small. It's light. Water resistant. Not sure about the battery complaints. I use it for quick (<1 minute) uses, from time to time. Been using the same battery for a good full year.
I think MagLite issuing LED 'upgrade' bulbs for the AA battery models is quite an admission that MagLite isn't the top in this category anymore. I am hoping their engineers can come up with a LED 'upgrade' bulb for this single, AAA battery model as well. I'd imagine it would be a better light.
Great little light! September 18, 2008 Great light-----------as all maglites are----great adjustable beam, extra battery in case on end------I just wish it had a push on/off button. but I wouldn't hesitate to purchase one for keychain, or if u have kids, for the back seat--reading maybe????
It is a Great Mini Flashlight...a Classic July 28, 2008 This is a remarkable flashlight. Well constructed in every detail. Very handy. You can even hang it with your keychain with the included strap and keyring. It is very light in aluminum construction. Shockproof and water resistant. The light is pretty respectable for its size. You can adjust the spread of the beam by twisting the head, which is also its on and off switch. It uses a single "AAA" battery. Available in many attractive candy colors. It even includes a spare lamp inside the tail cap (under the spring).
I have bought a number of these for years as gifts.
Recommendation: This has been a classic mini flashlight for years. But with the advent of newer high output LEDs lamps, it is best to check out the LED flashlights for comparisons.
What's not to like? July 17, 2008 I got this flashlight to go in my Leatherman Wave nylon case, and mostly to be used when I need to look into a computer. It fits perfectly in my case, and lights up a computer's insides perfectly.
While it's not the best flashlight I have for larger areas, that's not at all what I have it for (I usually use a 3 cell Mag Lite or one of those giant, 2 million candlepower spotlights for that), and it does do a good job for a light of that size.
The Mag Lite Solitaire is perfect for what it's made for.
