Very Bright -- Power Hungry and Worth It! January 9, 2009 This is a very bright light, much brighter than the older incandescent Mini Maglite and very much brighter than a single-LED flashlight I have from Brinkmann and a 9-LED light from Harbor Freight Tools. The illumination pattern is also much smoother, and I like that you can adjust it by rotating the head of the flashlight (although the range of adjustment is fairly limited compared to the incandescent version). I also like the cool white color of this flashlight.
It is advertised as being a 3 watt LED, so being an engineer, I had to measure it. It draws 370mA of current at 3 volts, so that's more like 1 watt of actual power dissipation. I guess they rate it compared to the amount of light that would be put out by a 3 watt incandescent bulb. By the way, my old incandescent bulb version of the same Mini Maglite draws 300mA of current, so don't expect more battery life from the LED version. My Brinkmann and Harbor Freight Tools flashlights draw around 50-60mA, so their batteries will last a lot longer at the expense of much less illumination. If you're concerned about going through batteries, you can use NiMH rechargeable batteries.
Overall I'm very impressed with this little light. It's a bit longer than the incandescent version but I haven't found that to be a problem.
what a life saver! January 7, 2009 i ordered this mag to replace my older one that wasnt LED. i wanted the brighter light that uses less battery!! got it in quick time (love amazon.com sellers!!) and just left it in package for a while (was maybe going to give as christmas present). christmas passed when i saw my package on shelf and figured might as well put the batteries in it and keep it. and wouldnt you just know it, next day we had an island while blackout!! I live in Hawaii and our electric company is still in stone ages. all i can say is this tiny light is amazing! i turned it on, then u unscrew the top and use that as a stand. the flashlight sits on the base and turns into a small lamp!! OMG, that little flashlight lit up my whole livingroom! the amount of light coming from it was amazing! it didnt even seem like out power went out.
so, if u even are in need of an awesome, small light that really shines, buy this one!!
Bright and tough, no more broken bulbs! January 4, 2009 I bought several LED Maglites this year. The Mini 2-AA LED (this one) had already been dropped several times and hasn't even flickered, the light is very bright and the batteries last(over 7 hours on the Mini, and not even beginning to dim yet).
I also bought a 3-Watt 2-D cell LED Maglite (from a local store), and it throws brilliant light a considerable distance. The 2-D LED Maglite also was not phased by being dropped, even though it fell some 15 feet onto concrete. The housing was slighly dented on one edge from the impact, but no other damage occured.
Junk December 31, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I use a flashlight in my work pretty much everyday. I bought this hoping for the best. What a disappointment... The light starts out sort of bright, but if you leave it on for more than 5 minutes, the light output drops significantly. Plus, it does not "focus" or "zoom". It is pretty much a piece of junk. I gave it to my kid who likes it, but he liked the broken flashlight he had before just as much.
Best LED Flashlight I've Found December 8, 2008 After having several other LED flashlights all I can say is this one takes the prize, and is the best I've found. It has all the battery and light life that you would expect from this technology with the build and focus-ability you would expect from MAG. Most other LED flashlights are only good for close range situations, while this one does both close range and long range thanks to MAG's twist focus capability. So get this one, even if it's a couple of bucks more.
It's also nice that it's made in the USA.
