Buy this one. December 22, 2008 If you need hands free lighting for hunting or any other situation, this is the light you need. If your agonizing over the price, bite the bullet and spend the money, it's worth it.
Brite light! October 16, 2008 This little thing is really brite! It will replace my flashlight which will now be my back-up. It has three brightness settings and a super long throwing boost setting for 20 seconds and the run time on each setting is great. It has a diffuser lens for close work at nite and spreads out into a wide angle. Its well made and will serve my hunting needs well. I highly recommend it!
This Petzl lamp is a great product October 7, 2008 I really like this lamp, its bright enough to work in the garage at night, walking the dog (and with mine you really need both hands!) or to use on hunts and even night time rifle matches. The red filter, which is easy to slip into and out of place, is fairly good at preserving your night vision. The housing is rugged and stays in place well, even though it does get heavy on your head after a few hours. Its good at getting just the right angle so you can point your head naturally. Not hot or dark spots, it throws a clean, even white light. Gotta love LEDs.
I do wish that the boost button was lockable, sometimes you just don't have a free hand to hold it on... duh! Half a star off for that.
Batteries don't last nearly as long as the manufacturer claims--another half star. BUT, they last long enough for most activities that you would need a hands free light for. So I still give it four stars.
Overall its a great piece of kit and I'm glad to have one.
Beyond my expectations October 6, 2008 I purchased this headlamp for hiking, hunting and fishing and so far it has exceeded my expectations. I have an older Petzl, with a halogen bulb that uses three AA's and it is much heavier, bulkier and the bigger batteries don't last as long, the old one does have an adjustable beam, but I find the light output on the XP to be more useful for my purposes. Comfort for long periods is also superior on this model. It took me a while to get used to the way the buttons operate, but now they seem natural. I can't tell you the battery life as I am still on the first ones, but I do use it mostly on low power ,which is more than adequate for most purposes. The red lens does cut down light output to much for my taste and I haven't really tried the green and blue yet.
Bright September 20, 2008 Extremely bright, well made.
Not going to be super waterproof, maybe just splashproof/light rain.
The color is more green than brown.
